Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Hackney Marshes
Gardeners Hackney Marshes is committed to providing gardening services in a safe and responsible manner. We place the health, safety and welfare of our clients, visitors, contractors, members of the public and our staff at the centre of how we operate. This policy sets out the principles and procedures we follow to manage risks and maintain safe working conditions during all gardening and grounds maintenance activities.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health arising from our work. Health and safety considerations are integrated into planning, supervision and delivery of every gardening project, from one-off visits to regular garden maintenance across our service area. We comply with applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice.
We review this policy regularly to ensure it remains effective and up to date with changes in law, equipment, methods of work and the needs of our clients and workers.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Hackney Marshes rests with the company management, who ensure that appropriate resources, training and supervision are provided. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing this policy on site, communicating safe working practices and monitoring compliance.
Every gardener and worker has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All workers must follow the instructions and procedures set out in this policy, use equipment correctly, report hazards and cooperate with any health and safety measures in place.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before starting work at any garden or grounds, we carry out a proportionate risk assessment. This includes identifying potential hazards such as uneven ground, trip risks, overhead branches, underground services, sharp tools, machinery, chemicals, manual handling tasks and weather conditions.
We evaluate the level of risk and put in place control measures to eliminate or reduce it. This may include changing the work method, using alternative tools, wearing specific personal protective equipment, cordoning off work areas or rescheduling in severe weather. Dynamic risk assessments are conducted on site so that unforeseen hazards are promptly identified and addressed.
Safe Use of Tools and Machinery
We ensure that all gardening tools and machinery are suitable for their intended use, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. This includes lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, brush cutters, leaf blowers and hand tools.
Only trained and competent workers operate powered equipment. All team members receive instruction in safe operating procedures, including starting and stopping equipment, safe distances, guarding, refuelling, noise control and dealing with jams or blockages. Machinery is never used in a way that endangers people, property or the environment.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is provided where required by the risk assessment and nature of the work. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, long sleeves, long trousers, high visibility garments and respiratory protection where appropriate.
Workers must wear the specified protective equipment for each task and keep it in good condition. Damaged or defective items are replaced promptly. PPE is treated as a last line of defence and is always used alongside other control measures.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of strains and injuries, we plan tasks to minimise heavy manual handling and, where possible, use mechanical aids such as trolleys or wheelbarrows.
Workers receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, including assessing the load, avoiding twisting, maintaining good posture and working within personal limits. Team lifting is used for heavier items. Regular breaks and task rotation are encouraged to manage fatigue.
Use of Chemicals and Substances
Where weed control products, fertilisers or other chemicals are required, we follow relevant safety data and apply them in accordance with manufacturer instructions and legal requirements. We seek to minimise the use of hazardous substances and choose safer alternatives where feasible.
Chemicals are stored securely when in our possession and transported safely to and from sites. Only trained personnel handle and apply such products, and appropriate protective equipment is worn at all times during use.
Environmental and Public Safety
We plan and carry out our gardening work with respect for the local environment and the safety of the public. Work areas are kept as tidy as reasonably practicable, and tools and materials are placed or stored so that they do not present a hazard to clients, neighbours or passers-by.
When working near paths, entrances, shared spaces or parking areas, we assess whether barriers, warning signs or temporary closures are necessary. Noise, dust and debris are controlled so far as reasonably possible, and waste is removed or managed in a responsible and lawful manner.
Weather and Outdoor Conditions
As outdoor specialists, we take account of changing weather conditions, including high winds, heavy rain, heat, cold and reduced visibility. Work at height, tree work, hedge cutting or machinery use may be postponed or adapted in adverse weather where it would be unsafe to proceed.
Workers are encouraged to dress appropriately for the conditions, maintain hydration in hot weather and take extra care on wet, icy or otherwise slippery surfaces.
Training, Supervision and Communication
Gardeners Hackney Marshes provides appropriate training for staff so they can carry out their roles safely and competently. This may include induction training, task-specific instruction, refreshers and toolbox talks on particular risks.
Supervision is proportionate to the experience and competence of individuals and the level of risk in the work being carried out. Health and safety information is communicated clearly so that everyone understands the standards expected on each site.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
Any accident, incident or near miss that occurs during our work is recorded and, where necessary, investigated. We use this information to identify root causes and introduce improvements to prevent recurrence.
Workers are encouraged to report hazards or unsafe conditions without delay so that corrective action can be taken. Learning from incidents is shared within the company to continuously improve our health and safety performance.
Review of Policy
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed on a regular basis and whenever significant changes occur in our operations, equipment, legislation or best practice. Updated versions are communicated to all staff and applied consistently across all gardening projects undertaken by Gardeners Hackney Marshes.
By following this policy, we aim to provide high quality gardening services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone affected by our work and supporting a safe, attractive environment in the communities we serve.
